Due to fatigue concerns, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has ordered air traffic controllers to take a minimum of ten-hour rest breaks between shifts, a move from a previous nine-hour requirement. This comes in the face of a widespread air traffic controller shortage, as the industry remains understaffed. The new requirements are expected to be implemented within 90 days. With the increase to ten-hour breaks, it hopes to improve safety in the skies, with those in the tower having sufficient rest. If an ATC works a night shift, the requirement will move to a 12-hour rest period.
