Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) seem like the commercial aviation industry’s big hope in terms of achieving net-zero flying. For years, airlines have touted SAF development programs, and international organizations, such as the European Union, have begun to mandate the widespread adoption of sustainable fuels. SAF is developed from a variety of organic ingredients, including animal fats and used cooking oil, and slices carbon emissions by a factor that some say is as high as 80%.
